Private Residence 05

We were retained to restore this home, built in 1930, to its original Georgian style, while updating the floor plan to meet the needs of a modern family. Our first move was to add a discrete addition to the kitchen, while combining the existing kitchen and servant rooms into a new spacious room that would function as a kitchen, breakfast room, and family room. Outside, a tandem, two-car, freestanding garage was built to provide the owner room for his collectable cars. We also removed an unsympathetically designed porch and replaced it with one that fit with the existing architecture. The new porch is accessed not only from the formal living and dining rooms on the ground floor, but also the renovated master bedroom on the second floor. One of our biggest challenges was designing a new master bathroom. The existing space had three large windows. In order to address these issues, we eschewed the typical bathroom finishes and design and opted for a more room-like look, specifying wood floors, wallpaper, and a custom, furniture-like vanity.
