Private Residence 03

Built in 1935 and designed by respected Pittsburgh architect Benno Janssen, Cherry Hill is located in Sewickley Heights. We were retained to oversee the renovation of this historic six-bedroom home in 1996. Our primary challenge was to transform the early 20th century floor plan (replete with servant quarters and formal living spaces) into one for 21st century living. Our first move was to combine the existing, smaller food preparation rooms into a single and spacious new kitchen. In order to create an informal eating area in this new kitchen, we designed a new bay window that would project out into a new flagstone patio. The bay window and patio were designed to fit seamlessly with Janssen’s original design and create human scale on an otherwise long elevation. We also added two half-baths and coat closets, revamped the entire lighting scheme, and restored the woodwork throughout the first floor. On the second floor, some bedrooms were consolidated to create a large master bathroom and closet.
