Homestead Smokestacks

The Homestead Smokestacks project is located within the 320 acre site of the former U.S. Steel factory in Homestead, approximately 4 miles from the center of the City of Pittsburgh. This site is currently being redeveloped as a multi-use complex that will transform it into a regional attraction incorporating retail shops, entertainment, and housing. The smokestacks, constructed many years ago as part of the steel making process, were retained in order to create an interesting and important focal point for the new development. The smokestacks will be transformed into an attractive space for pedestrians to congregate while they visit the shops and recreational attractions planned for this area.

First, the exterior of the smokestacks have been restored, cleaning and stabilizing the masonry. Next, a pedestrian walkway has been created along the entire length of the smokestacks, with stairs and ramps to be installed at a later date. Flood lights have been installed on the east and west sides of each smokestack to fully illuminate them at night. As the project progresses trees will be planted along either side of the smokestacks, and a bronze plaque will inform visitors of the history of the site and the use of the smokestacks in the steel making process.

Homestead Train Station

In 1995 Glance & Associates was retained to renovate the exterior of the Homestead Train Station. The train station is located near the entrance of the Homestead USX Steel site, and was the arrival point for thousands of immigrants coming to Homestead for work in the steel mills. It is on the National Register of Historic pPlaces. Park Corporation bought the station in order to renovate it for adaptive reuse as a restaurant.

Exterior renovation included replacement of the Spanish tile roof, reinforcement of the roof structure, chimney repair, gutter installation, and the replacement of badly deteriorated windows and doors. New windows and doors were designed and custom built to maintain the historical appearance of the building. Site improvements included the installation of exterior lighting selected for historic authenticity, the design and construction of new stairs, a ramp to provide access to the platform around the station, the re-paving of the platform itself, and the installation of a decorative iron railing around the platform.
