Greenforge Office Building

This project was an extensive renovation to an existing and unremarkable 1980's warehouse building that was vacant for three years prior to our client purchasing it. Our client is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote conservation throughout the region. Our client’s needs were to transform the building into a business incubator that would provide affordable commercial space for organizations with a commitment to a sustainability and conservation. To increase the usable area within the building, the roof on the rear facade was raised 5 feet. By increasing the ceiling height from 4 feet to more than 9 feet, approximately 4,000 square feet of usable space was ‘found’ within the building. This unique approach greatly reduced construction costs by utilizing the existing structural members (thus reducing the environmental impact of the construction), and allowing us to enhance this once neglected facade with new windows and cladding materials. We also proposed a new glass-enclosed, barrel-vaulted foyer and entry with a staircase that connected to an existing entry on the lower floor. Throughout the project, sustainable materials and technologies were used. These materials include energy efficient insulation, a geothermal HVAC system, a ‘green’ roof, and a photovoltaic array that generates some of the building’s energy.
