Center for Conservation Education

Westmoreland Conservation District, a non-profit organization that promotes, educates, and implements conservation principles for the county, commissioned us to convert a 120-year old barn into office and education space. The conversion had to embody the Center’s philosophy of ‘green design’ and conservation. As such, we modified and restored the barn using materials and craftsmen from the county. Additionally, we specified and designed a gray water reclamation system and a geothermal heating and cooling system. Because the barn was dismantled and relocated from another location off site, we could site the barn to take advantage of natural light & ventilation. Finally, our plant selection maximized the benefits of the local climate and ecosystem.
