Braddock Employment Center
As part of a multi-year contract with the Allegheny County Department of Economic Development for various projects throughout the county,
Glance + Associates and Civil & Environment Consultants, Inc. (CEC) were assigned to renovate two adjacent buildings in the center of the
commercial district of the Borough of Braddock. A previously prosperous community located several miles southeast of Pittsburgh, Braddock’s
deterioration corresponded with the decline of its once thriving steel industry. As part of ongoing efforts to revitalize the community,
these two buildings were transformed into a single facility with offices, a computer room, and classrooms dedicated to training residents for
new employment. The program also called for an Activities Room for helping at-risk teens. Our design intent was to create a dialog between
the activities in the building and the larger public realm. A large and colorful neon sign was placed over the main entrance to light and
enliven the main street while giving the building a distinct identity. A new floor-to-ceiling glass storefront system was installed to
visually open the building to the neighborhood and flood the interior with natural light. The Activities Room, immediately adjacent to the
entry, is open to a loft thereby creating a voluminous and energizing space. A new roof, elevator and fire safety system were installed
and the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems were all replaced. The exterior facades were restored, including the masonry.
